We have reached the business end of the tournament, with the last league stage match being conducted tomorrow at the Chinnaswamy.
India is the only team to have remained unbeaten so far, with their campaign being one of the most dominating ones for a team at ODI WCs.
On the other hand, the Netherlands sit at the bottom of the table, even though they have exceeded the majority of cricket fan’s expectations in this tournament.
Team Overview
India
An ICC trophy drought of nearly 10 years and the tag of the host nation levied humongous expectations upon the Indian Cricket team and so far they have responded brilliantly to the pressure.
With 8 out of 8 wins, they have been in their most destructive mode for their last 3 games, especially their bowlers; dismissing their opponents for scores of 83,55 and 129 in their last 3 matches.
- 3 Indian batsmen feature in the current ICC top 10 ODI batsman rankings, with Gill occupying the top spot.
- 4 Indian bowlers feature in the current ICC top 10 ODI bowler rankings, with Siraj occupying the top spot.
- On top of this, India is the top-ranked ODI team in the ICC rankings.
All that remains is the World Cup Trophy.
Netherlands
The only associate nation of this tournament, the Netherlands have exceeded expectations, being the only side other than India to have defeated South Africa in the ongoing tournament.
However, an extra victory against Bangladesh too hasn’t been able to lift them up from the wooden spot position.
Other than that, their Champions Trophy dreams also look almost shattered, as only a win(or no result) tomorrow can get them their ticket to Pakistan.
Death bowling has always been an issue for this Dutch side, and it also proved to be their kryptonite against England who went on to score 339 after being reduced to 192/6 in the last Netherlands game.
Probable Playing XI
India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Siraj
The only reason for any changes made to the above XI would be with the intention of resting a few of the main players ahead of the knockouts.
Prasidh might get a chance ahead of one of the leading pacers, most likely Bumrah.
Any of the top-order batsmen too might miss out with Ishan Kishan occupying his position.
Netherlands: Max O’Dowd, Wesley Barresi, Colin Ackermann, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Scott Edwards, Bas De Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Logan Van Beek, Roelof Van Der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul Van Meekeren
Despite the drubbing against England, the Netherlands are likely to go with the same team.
Ryan Klein might get a chance ahead of Teja depending upon what team combination coach Cook will decide upon.
Pitch Report
Chinnaswamy was expected to be a belter and it has seen 2 of the best high-scoring thrillers of the tournament in the form of Australia vs Pakistan and New Zealand vs Pakistan.
However, batting first in the day has proven to be a horrific experience for teams like England and Sri Lanka.
The match might end really early if India gets to field first, with Siraj and Co. wreaking havoc upon the thin Dutch top-order.
Still, Edwards might choose this poison instead of fielding first as the in-form Indian batting can make the bowl travel a distance across the short boundaries of Chinnaswamy.
Players To Watch Out For
Mohammad Siraj: The latest number 1 ranked ODI bowler, 2023 has been a dream year for Miyaa.
40 wickets @18.95, Siraj has been one of the key pieces in solving India’s problems with the new ball. Only 6 wickets away from having the most ODI wickets in 2023, Siraj will be licking his lips after seeing the horrendous numbers of the Dutch top order.
Scott Edwards: Captain Marvel, Scott has been the only batsman of the Netherlands whose numbers in the ongoing tournament can be compared with the average modern-day ODI batsman.
With only 97 runs away from becoming the highest scorer for the men in orange in ODIs, Edwards has a golden opportunity to achieve it against India in Chinnaswamy.
Shubman Gill: The new prince in town, Gill has been on a roll so far in ODIs.
Only Ryan Ten Doeschate has a better ODI batting average than Gill(min. 1K runs) and only De Villiers and Gill have a 50+ average and 100+ Strike rate in ODI history (min. 1K runs).
However, he has been a pale shadow of these numbers in the 2023 World Cup, averaging 36.5 across his 6 games. Anyhow, the Dutch bowling attack might be just the team which can help Gill regain his form ahead of the knockouts.
